Creating a Tiered Promotions
Use Case: You want to give shoppers tiered discounts for items from a category.
The shoppers need to:
- Spend between $1 and $100 from Shoes and get 10% off the cart subtotal.
- Spend between $100.01 and $200 from Shoes and get 20% off the cart subtotal.
You can set up all of the tiers in a single promotion. Each tier is a separate Cart discount action that only applies when the cart subtotal is within its range.
Create tiers from lowest to highest
Create the cart discount action for the lowest tier first, then add the higher tiers in ascending order. If a higher tier is created first, its discount can reduce the cart subtotal into a lower tier's range, and the lower tier's discount is applied as well, so the shopper gets both discounts.
For example, with the tiers in this guide, a $110 cart gets 20% off, which brings the subtotal to $88. That falls in the $1 to $100 range, so the 10% discount would also apply.
To set this up in the Promotions Builder:
- In Commerce Manager, go to Merchandise > Promotions > Builder. Edit or create a new promotion.
- Under Conditions, select a condition type to set up the qualification for the promotion.
- Configure the first cart discount action for the $1 to $100 tier. Start with the lowest tier. See the warning above.
- Under Actions, select Cart discount.
- Select The cart subtotal discount is a percentage of and enter
10. See Cart Discount. - Click +refine and, under Cart subtotal range:, select is within a range.
- Enter the range amounts. The first value is the minimum amount, and the second value is the maximum amount. Both values are inclusive.
- In this case, enter $1 and $100.
- In the range, click +refine and, under Only include items:, select in node/hierarchy (category). Select the
Shoescategory. - Click Done to complete the setup.
- Configure the second cart discount action for the $100.01 to $200 tier. Add each higher tier after the tier below it. If you have more tiers, repeat this step for each tier in ascending order.
- On the first cart discount action, click Duplicate action.
- In the duplicated action, change the percentage to
20and the range amounts to $100.01 and $200. TheShoesinclusion is copied with the action.
- Click Create or Save to create the promotion.
- (Optional) Set up promotion codes if the promotion has the Coupon-driven toggle ON (by default). See Creating promotion codes.
- If Coupon-driven is OFF, then the discount is automatically applied to the cart when the cart subtotal is within a tier's range.
note
- Exclusions and inclusions that you add to a range control which items count toward the cart subtotal for that tier. They don't limit what is discounted. When a tier applies, the discount applies to the whole cart subtotal.
- A cart discount with a range can't have exclusions or inclusions directly on the discount. Add them to the range instead.
- The Promotions Builder doesn't check tiers for overlaps or gaps. Make sure the ranges don't overlap so that only one tier applies to a cart.
- To leave the top tier open-ended, leave the maximum amount blank. The range then applies to any cart subtotal equal to or greater than the minimum amount. Only leave the top tier open-ended. An open-ended range on a lower tier overlaps every tier above it.
Results:
- When the cart subtotal from the
Shoescategory is between $1 and $100, the first tier 10% discount is applied to the cart subtotal. - When the cart subtotal from the
Shoescategory is between $100.01 and $200, the second tier 20% discount is applied instead of the first tier discount. - When the cart subtotal from the
Shoescategory is over $200, no discount is applied, because the top tier has a maximum amount. To discount these carts at 20% too, leave the maximum amount of the second tier blank. - Items from other categories don't count toward the tier ranges. If the cart only contains items from other categories, no discount is applied.
